Designed to fabrication tolerances typical of automobiles, the Lucas Museum facade presented a unique challenge for construction. To ensure accuracy of the FRPs from off-site fabrication until their placement on the double-curved facade, elaborate methods were developed both for the tertiary structural system and the fabrication process itself. Grasshopper scripts were developed to rapidly turn design models into BIMs, update tertiary fabrication models when clashes were detected between two dozen sub-contractors, iterate layouts when loads failed structural analysis, automate fabrication documents and check that all tolerances and requirements in the model were met for construction.
